Future citizens, parents, guardians, and school counselors:
First, we truly hope you and your families are staying well. While we haven’t had a chance to work together yet, you are in our hearts and thoughts.
As we’ve communicated previously, the safety and health of our participants, counselors, and staff at American Legion Auxiliary Volunteer Girls State are our highest priorities when we operate our sessions. As such, like many conferences and camps in the U.S. and abroad, we have been closely and seriously monitoring the rapidly developing COVID-19 situation as it relates to our 2020 session.
While we had hoped this time wouldn’t come, and after much thoughtful discussion, our leadership team has made the decision to cancel our in-person 2020 session of ALA Volunteer Girls State on the campus of Lipscomb University. We believe this is the right and only choice to make, both in the best interest of our participants, as well as in light of current local, state, and federal guidelines related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, we have a strong and innovative staff and counselor team, and we have continuously adapted our program to countless changes over our nearly 75-year history. While our in-person session will not take place this year, we are developing an abbreviated virtual session to deliver some of our program’s curriculum and content to those students who have already registered or who will register by May 15, 2020. While we are still determining the best date to hold this virtual session, we anticipate it will take place during the same timeframe as our original schedule, May 24-30. We are able to offer this session for a $50 fee, which will cover costs like a participant t-shirt, postage, or other supplies. Many more details about this session, including next steps and registration instructions, will be available soon.
If your student has already been registered and you have sent in payment for our in-person session, please be assured that we will refund your payment as soon as possible, less the fee for the virtual session. If your student has already been registered but you have not sent in payment, please do not send any payment at this time.
If you have not already registered students, we hope you will move forward on doing so once we provide registration instructions so that they may have the opportunity to participate in our virtual session. We know that school closures may create a delay in this process, so we have extended our deadline to May 15, 2020.
Again, we will send many more details about our virtual session, including timing, content, and registration instructions soon, so stay tuned for more information.
We can’t thank you enough for your interest in our program, especially during such an unprecedented and historic time. We are confident that we will come together once again to ensure our program successfully continues when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, please watch for additional details about our virtual session, and please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions at firstname.lastname@example.org.
